Description
Miner's candle holder. Before the 1860s, miners attached candles to their caps, or to the walls of the mine using clay. The miner's candlestick was invented by Comstock area miners, who bent a spike in order to hold a candle. The spike was then driven into a crevice or wooden beam to keep the candle in place. The hook on the candlestick was added after 1872, and allowed a miner to also attach the candle to his cap.
