Photograph caption dated March 2, 1961 reads, "Steve Matthews, Valley College's ace distance runner, is seen breaking the tape at the end of the mile which he won in the fair time of 4:23.6 yesterday as he and his Monarch teammates dropped a 65-57 track and field decision to Los Angeles City College in the Valley team's home bastion."
