Description
The Citadel Dansborg, built in 1620 like a solid fortress. (Photo 1998). Tranquebar was a Danish Colony from 1620-1845, administrated by the East Indian (Asiatic) Company as a trading company. The Colony served as a base for trade, and the national Indians were only regarded as a cheap labour force under slave-like conditions. The purpose was simply maximum profit. Different with the Tranquebar Mission, promoted by the Danish King, Frederik IV, and starting with sending of the 2 pioneer missionaries of The Lutheran Mission, Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau from Germany. They arrived to Tranquebar 1706. The Mission had only one Aim: 'to serve the Indian people with the Joy of the Gospel'. No wonder, the mission work in many periods was dominated by resistance and problems, both from Denmark and the Colony administration.
