Sarah Hinton Gourley was born near Fort Wayne, Indiana on May 27, 1849. When she was seven years old, her family decided to join her uncle, Elihu Anthony, in California. They travelled to New York, took a steamer to Central America, crossed the isthmus of Panama by train, then sailed up to San Francisco, finally arriving in Santa Cruz in July, 1856.
