L-R Captain Fred Warner (port pilot), Richard J. Brophy (business manager), and Captain Oscar Nilson (commanding officer of whaler), members of Commander Richard E. Byrd are shown aboard the whaling ship C.A. Larsen as they prepare to leave the Los Angeles Harbor for Byrd's first exploration of Antarctica and the South Pole, via New Zealand. This event took place on October 10, 1928.
