Loretta Thompson-Glickman was born in 1945. In 1977 she became the first Black woman elected as a Pasadena City Director, then a few days later she became the first city director to become a mother while in office. In 1982, she was the nation’s first Black woman mayor with a population exceeding 100,000. Mrs. Thompson-Glickman was a former jazz singer, performing in small local clubs, and she toured with the New Christy Minstrels before giving up her career in 1975. Mrs. Thompson-Glickman also directed the Chapel Choir at Pasadena’s Grace United Methodist Church and worked as an investment counselor at a Pasadena firm. Mrs. Thompson-Glickman passed away in 2001 (Political power, 1982). William Joseph “Bill” Bogaard was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1938. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University and was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan. Mayor Bogaard moved to Pasadena with his wife in 1971. Prior to being mayor, he was a lawyer and an educator, teaching at the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California. He also served as Executive Vice President of First Interstate Bancorp, and as an arbitrator of business disputes (Biography, 2015). Mayor Bogaard was mayor twice, first time from 1984-1986 under the system by which the city council member who had not been mayor was chosen by the other members of the City Council. During that term in office Live Aid II concert was held in the Rose Bowl, and a new contract was given to administer Brookside Golf Course was signed. Mayor Bogaard then became the first became mayor of Pasadena elected under the current format involving a city-wide election in 1999, and then was re-elected in 2003 with over 85% of the votes. In the 2007 election, he sought re-election for a third term as Mayor and won with 88.7% of the votes, and in 2011 he ran and won unopposed. Mayor Bogaard is the longest serving mayor in Pasadena’s history. He has served on the Board of Directors of the League of California Cities since 2007, and was elected as President of the Board on September 7, 2012 (Wikipedia.org, 2015). As of 2015, Mr. Bogaard serves as chair of Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative, and the Emergency Services Council, City of Pasadena. He serves as a Board member of the Pasadena Educational Foundation and the Pasadena YMCA, and is a member of the Gold Line Foothill Construction Authority, and the Urban Land Institute. In 1997, he received the cities highest civic recognition, the Arthur Noble Award. During his time as mayor, the city has seen the arrival of the Gold Line light rail transit system, significant investment in new housing, construction of a new convention center, the establishment of new arts institutions, and the reform of the public schools (Biography, 2015).
