1989-1163. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. B, leaf 14. A birds-eye view of a flooded street; brick buildings line both sides of the street; in the lower left is a sign "Dentist" on side of the building; in front of the store is another standing sign "WW.Thomas Dentist New York"; in front of second sign a man stands on a plank and looks into the distance; in middle distance a man poles his way across the street on a raft; another group is further down the street; on left side, a sign "Connell, Ryan & Co" and on right side "St. George Drug." Also have negative: no. #28,297 (4 x 5 in.) Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "Jay street, looking East, at 4th & Jay street... during the flood of 1861 - 62." [On Dec. 9, 1861, the northeastern levee broke. Water rushed through the slough west of the Fort.....In less than one-half hour, the new lots between O and R streets were overflowed 2 or 3 feet deep; by 9AM entire city south of Jay street was inundated; by 2nd day only dry points left in city were R street levee, Front street levee, I street and Poverty Hill (21st street); on January 10, 1862 levee again broke and water was even higher. The occurances were merely a repetition of those of the previous month.] Reproduction of original from 1861/62.
