Photograph caption dated April 8, 1963 reads, "Play becomes most important lesson children at Washington Nursery School, Burbank, learn. One of 13 Child Care Centers in Valley area under supervision of California State Department of Education, children attend school between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. While parents work. A long day necessitates program balanced between quiet and active play geared to age range. The children receive health care, nutrition, rest and guidance in play activities. The six full-time staff members are alert to situations to give children opportunities for learning. It is a school where children of pre-school age learn the beginning steps toward inner control. Above, left photo, Ronald Grissom, 2, looks wistfully as others play. It's his first week at school. Three little maidens, left to right, Jody Bennett, 4, Debora Warsaw, 4, and D'Arcy Morningstar, 4, make mudpie stew, while Sandra Chaney, 4 1/2, dabbles in fingerpaint.
