Description
Coronel Jaime Flores Grijalva, commander of the Third Infantry Brigade of the Salvadoran Army in San Miguel, speaks with a woman in San Agustín after a 5-day guerrilla occupation of this town. He is armed with a rifle. The woman in the yellow dress carries a blue water jug. Other civilians and soldiers are walking outside the destroyed town. Though now deceased, Colonel Grijalva is among 32 Salvadoran military officers accused of directing, ordering, or participating in the operation that killed almost 1,000 people in December 1981 in El Mozote and its surroundings. Half of those victims were children and adolescents. In January 2018 a Salvadoran court recognized the events as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
