Description
This Parisian Costume entitled "Manon" of 1914 was designed by artist H. Robert Dammy in the late eighteenth-century style of the court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The costume, meant to be worn at a masquerade ball, has a rose motif. The ball gown has a bodice and overskirt of light cream fabric patterned with pink roses. The underskirt is of bold black and white stripes. The bodice is snug with a deep v waistline and a low neckline. The overskirt is open at the center front, and has two black bows at the sides with long ends. The neckline, center front of the bodice, sleeves, and overskirt hem are edged with a trim formed of garlands of small light and dark pink roses. Small bunches of extra roses are at the center front of the neckline and at the shoulders. The woman wears a powdered wig of the style of the period, with more rose garlands. A wide black ribbon is tied at her neck, with a pearl drop at the center front. She wears another necklace, also with a pendant. She wears a black mask, and has a black beauty spot on her cheek. She gestures gracefully, as if dancing, and a small ring is on her left hand, which is raised to her neck. One small pointed shoe is visible at the hem of her gown.
