Description
The bathroom in the Old Governor's Mansion, which is located at Sixteenth and H Streets, is the subject of this photograph, taken circa 1955. Original owner Albert Gallatin encouaged innovative planning for his elaborate Victorian house, using an electrical pump in the basement to force water above the third floor for use throughout the building. Running water was only one of the benefits of this system, and for the ten years Gallatin lived in the house before selling it to Joseph Steffens he and his family enjoyed the rare privilege of indoor plumbing, a luxury unavailable to most of California at that time.
