Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Alan Cranston where he alleges that Pace is getting around the state and making a name for himself, and was in his office on a "fishing" trip but only spoke to Cranston's deputy. Script reads, "State Controller Alan Cranston tonight answered charges made against him by San Jose Mayor Dr. Joseph Pace. Speaking at a news conference in Palo Alto, Cranston said Pace is simply looking for an issue on which he can build a campaign. Pace -- a Republican -- is seeking his party's nomination to run for Cranston's post. Pace claims he went to Cranston's office in search of public documents and was refused. Cranston tells a different story. Then Cranston was asked how Pace would do in the primary elections. Following the news conference, Cranston delivered a speech at a dinner in his honor. There he called for an awakening by Californians regarding their loss of natural resources. He told the group that 'modern highwaymen' are destroying California's forests and coastlines, and that they must be stopped." Segment 2 (silent): Very brief shot of the Rickey's Hyatt House revolving sign, likely the site of Alan Cranston's dinner in Palo Alto. Segment 3 (silent): Shots of a banner, "Northside Neighborhood Association Street Lighting Poster Contest," and close-ups of posters, including one reading "Better Lights for Safer Lives." Story reads, "Members of San Jose's Northside Neighborhood Association are stepping up the pace in their campaign for improved street lighting in their area. A portion of that renewed effort was on display this afternoon in a north Fourth Street parking lot. Large window-sized posters -- about 50 of them -- were on display. The posters were drawn by students at three area schools. Following the selection of winners nd awarding of prizes the posters were removed to a number of stores. The neighborhood group claims its streets are unsafe as a result of poor night lighting. Group spokesmen say better lighting is needed in an area from Santa Clara Street north to the Bayshore Freeway between Guadalupe Creek and the Coyote River." Segment 4 (sound): interview with Donald Duncan re Vietnam War, who says "we are destroying the country and its people," but also claims the United States could win the war in six weeks if it really wanted to. Script reads, "Donald Duncan, former Master Sergeant in the famed Green Berets and an outspoken critic of the war in Vietnam, was in Monterey today to speak at a campaign luncheon for Richard Miller, Democratic candidate for the 12th District Congressional seat. Duncan, a 10-year veteran of the Army.. including 18 months service in Vietnam, recently made the headlines when he returned to civilian status and immediately labeled the Vietnam conflict a complete and utter lie. He commented on the war, as he experienced it..." Segment 5 (silent): Shot of Corner Market sign with Squirt soda advertisement on it, then interior of market with car crashed through the window, shelves in disarray. Script reads, "A San Jose woman is in fair condition at County Hospital this evening after an early morning traffic accident sent her car careening thru a Willow Street store window. Officers said the car, driven by Antonette Polyniak of 2332 Gavota Street, ran a flashing red light at the Corner of Vine and Willow. The vehicle was broadsided by a car driven by George Barry of 1159 Bird Street. The woman's car careened out of control, smashing thru the plate glass window of the Corner Market on the southwest corner of the intersection. The woman suffered chest and head injuries in the crash. The force of the impact cracked out two huge windows, and sent merchandise spilling from the shelves. Fire units were standing by at the scene. The crash cracked a gas main in the store front. For a tense half hour, a gas explosion was feared until a repairman shut down the valve." Segment 6 (silent): Students outside at what appears to be a festival, man playing a flute, woman eating a skewer/kebab, shot of a "Teriyaki a Go Go" food stand. Story reads, "Seventh Street, running thru the heart of San Jose State College, exploded yesterday afternoon in a riot of color, noise and students...Hundreds of Spartans jammed seventh Street during the noon hour to wind up the college's International Week. A dozen booths, manned by students of different nationalities offered a wide variety of foods. The emphasis was on the unique in foreign fare, as students sold the best their respective countries had to offer. And while the students munched, there was entertainment. Everything from a senorita with a rose in her hair doing a high stepping fandango, to a group of Arab students dancing to the music of a flute and the accompaniment of clapping hands. There was peaceful co-existence between all...though the Arab and Israeli pavilions were strategically placed far, far apart..."
