Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent + sound): Man exiting airplane on tarmac, "Pacific" on side of airplane, enters terminal, greeted by woman. Segues to interview with reporter. Script reads, "Vietnam Visitor. An official representative of the South Vietnamese government said today that a Buddhist take-over in South Vietnam is virtually impossible. Dang Duc Khoi, Director of Public Affairs for the South Vietnamese Embassy, made the statement shortly after his arrival at San Jose's Municipal Airport. He was in Santa Clara County to address the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce Friday luncheon meting. Dang said that a monolithic group such as the Buddhists could not dominate the diversified philosophies of the war-torn country. Channel 11's Bob Marsden talked to Dang concerning the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the Vietnam War..." Segment 2 (silent): People touring the interior of a police station, showing teletype machines, filing shelves, sorting machine, exhibit case of guns, men walking outside at night. Script reads, "The San Jose citizens at this hour are riding through the streets of the city in squad cars -- in a new experiment in public relations by the San Jose Police Department. The police invited the citizens to see what a police man's job looks like from the other side of the windshield. Sergeant Bob Moyer began the evening with a tour through the Police Department, beginning with the police night shift briefing session for officers going on duty. The project is a public relations program aimed at the City's minority groups. Tonight members of the Mexican American Civic Council got the tour. In future weeks representatives of other minority groups are expected to be invited. All this comes at a time when the police public relations is nursing a black eye. Last week a dozen minority group leaders walked out of a meeting with the police advisory board...after Chief Ray Blackmore refused to allow the formation of a citizen's board to investigate complaints against police. Tonight's tour included various sections of the police department -- records -- detectives -- and communications. The group later paired off to spend several hours riding with police officers on their beats to get the feel of what it's like behind the badge." Segment 3 (sound): Man in lab coat speaking from behind his desk to camera about how a decision needs to be made via consensus, not unilaterally, and the student vote is not going to change health service policy. Script reads, "Stanford Sex. ...On the matter of more sexual freedom for Stanford students, a referendum asking the Student Health Service to distribute contraceptives to any student desiring them was passed by the student body by a two to one margin. The vote, however, serves only as an expression of opinion and is not binding. The results of the referendum will be submitted to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Maurice Osborne, Executive Director of the Student Health Service, commented to Channel 11 news regarding the Health Service's stand on the matter..." Segment 4 (silent): Baseball game at Buck Shaw Stadium (Santa Clara University). Script reads, "Santa Clara continued their hex over Stanford today, as they defeated the Indians for the 6th straight time 6 to 3...this was the Bronco's 10th win in the last 11 games with the Indians...2nd baseman Ray Henningson and right fielder Rod Austin led the 10 hit Bronco attack as they each went 2 for 3. The Broncos scored 3 times in the 1st and twice in the 2nd to put the ball game out of reach...the two teams meet tomorrow at Stanford at 2 pm." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Exterior and interior shots of Winton Hotel. Script reads, "The eight owners of San Jose's Winton Hotel have been issued an ultimatum by the City Fire Department...either fire safety measures are taken or the building will be declared hazardous. The 50-year old, two-story building, located at the corner of Second and San Fernando Streets, it he first such structure to come under the City's public nuisance abatement ordinance. Fire Marshal John Gerhard said yesterday that the owners must either install sprinklers along the 13-foot-long second story hallway, or construct a second exit at the end of the dead-end corridor. He added that if the building were not included in the San Antonio Plaza Renewal Project, other corrections would be required." Segment 2 (sound): Woman on sofa talking about her recent experience piloting an aircraft. Script reads, "Lady Pilot. San Jose pilot Irene Leverton is back in San Jose after her unsuccessful attempt at a new flight record across the Pacific. Miss Leverton took off from San Jose on Tuesday in a try to become the first woman to fly solo -- westbound -- across the Pacific in a single engine plane. Near the half-way point her navigation radio went out and she was forced to return to California. Here's how she described the flight to Channel 11's Paul Lockwood..." Segment 3 (sound): Man speaking to camera regarding Head Start program, education programs. Script reads, "A two day conference of Alum Rock District teachers begins tonight. The focus will be on the disadvantaged minority children living in the East Side, and efforts to improve their schooling and attitudes toward education. One of the speakers at the meeting will be Ernest Paramo, newly appointed principal of San Jose's Gardner School. He talked with Channel 11 about educating disadvantaged children."
