Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Arnold Palmer warms up at the Rancho Park course, watched by his Army of fans. Palmer won the L.A. Open three times--in 1963, 1966, and 1967. But it was his misfortune at the 1961 tourney, played at Rancho, that cemented his place in L.A. Open lore. On the par-five ninth hole, in his attempt to hit to the green in two, Palmer hit four balls out of bounds, two into the nearby driving range, and two into the street to card a 12. Photo dated: December 30, 1963.
