Description
A bust-length studio portrait of Judge Martin Welker turned slightly to the right. Welker has a thick beard that stretches past his collar, but does not have a mustache. "M.B. Brady & Co. National Photographic Portrait Galleries ; No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. ; Washington, D.C. & New York." printed in black on verso.
Title from verso. The bottom of the image is signed "M. Welker". The photograph is mounted on a card with text printed at the bottom reading "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia." Welker served three terms in the U.S. House of representatives (1865-1871) and was appointed to the United States District Court for the Nothern District of Ohio by President Ulysses S. Grant, which he served on from 1873 to 1889.
