Photograph caption dated June 2, 1940 reads, "Smashed pumping facilities and heat-twisted piping are all that remain of this section of Wilmington refinery of the Union Oil Co. today after earth-rocking blast and fire gutted it. Damage is estimated at $100,000. Ray Pillsbury, worker who shut off valves, and this prevented worse damage, was burned in the fire. Eighteen other workmen escaped uninjured."
