Six Air Force and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) engineer-pilots are now at Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope Valley laying the groundwork for the most advanced orbital and re-entry attempt yet - Dyna-Soar. Under way since 1960, the Dyna-Soar project is expected to place a man in orbit, and then return him precisely to any selected spot on earth by mid-1965. Here, Astronauts Capt. William J. Knight (left) and Capt. H. C. Gordon, stand next to F-104 Fighter used to prepare for Dyna-Soar project. Photograph dated April 16, 1962.
