Description
A large crowd attends Pope John Paul II's visit to Nicaragua at Plaza 19 de Julio in Managua in March 1983. Many are holding the red-and-black flag of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), the yellow-and-white of the Vatican City, and the white-and-blue flag of Nicaragua. In the foreground in the middle of the image there are two unidentified attendees each holding posters. The poster on the left is an image of Pope John Paul II that reads, "Welcome to Sandino's Fatherland." The poster on the right is an image of Catholic priest and revolutionary Gaspar García Laviana, who fought for the liberation of Nicaragua and its people. He was killed in action while fighting the forces of Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1978. The poster reads, "We are loyal to Gaspar's example." In the background there is a large poster whose message is illegible.
