Description
This photograph shows a large group of Girl Reserves posing on the street and in buses in front of the Y.W.C.A. building as they start for a rally in San Francisco. Some of the girls hold a banner with the Girl Reserves emblem on it. A bus driver stands at each end of the picture.
On recto: "Girl Reserves as they start for rally in San Francisco - Sat. Jan 24th 1925". Handwritten in black is: "[illegible] photo". Photograph mounted on green construction paper. Mounted paper has been folded along the photograph on both sides. There are small tears in it and a pinhole on the top right side. The photograph has a pinhole in each corner and a white substance on the right side. In 1918 the YWCA of the USA organized the Girl Reserves to bring 12 to 18-year-olds into the national movement, with sailor-style uniforms and three-fingered salutes. From Fran Smith, "Breaking Ground:The Daring Women of the YWCA in the Santa Clara Valley, 1905-2005," (2005), p. 35.
