Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys at Christmas to needy children. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist Major Bill Hendricks. It began as a local charitable effort in Los Angeles. The initial effort was so successful that Toys for Tots launched a national campaign in 1948. Photograph caption dated November 30, 1957 reads "Lt. Col. Ed Gilbert, left, commander of the Marine Corps Reserve in Los Angeles, and Sheriff Eugene Biscailuz, center, are shown with Gerald Block, right, president of Builders Emporium, as plans are made for the kickoff of the 1957 'Toys for Tots' campaign. Builders Emporium, again for the third year, will be the San Fernando Valley Collection Headquarters for the toy collection program."
