The mood was somber at the Coliseum on February 11, 1980, as Supervisor Kenneth Hahn and congressional medal of honor winner Louis Van Iersel began a 24-hour vigil in honor of the Iranian hostages. An Iranian flag painted with a mark for each of the 100 days of the hostages' captivity was placed outside the east end of the Coliseum. Approximately 50 representatives of veterans groups, public officials and local clergy gathered around as the first of 24 candles--one for each of the next 24 hours--was lighted. The supervisors had asked local drivers to honor the hostages by turning their car headlights on during the day. But according to the CHP, only about 10 percent of the freeway drivers responded.
