This Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument is located at 7570 McGroarty Terrace. Known as McGroarty Arts Center, which was managed by the Department of Recreation and Parks from 1953 until 1974, when management was transferred to the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles. Over twenty years later, McGroarty Arts Center was privatized and has since been operated by a non-profit organization in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles. Photograph article dated October 5, 1960 partially reads, "One of the first things anyone should learn about the community of Tujunga is how to pronounce it. It is an Indian word using the Spanish pronunciation of the letter 'J' which sounds like a harsh English 'H'. Tujunga is the community of some 16,000 persons. It is located just east of its sister-city, Sunland, and spreads out along Foothill boulevard, a major west-east street which cuts through the northeast San Fernando Valley. Tujunga shoulders most of the dignified, historic responsibility in the sister act and has become known throughout the state and country for two primary reasons: its reputation as a healthy place to live for those afflicated with bronchial conditions and as the home of the late John Steven McGroarty, poet laureate of California." Photograph caption reads, "Native rock, used in many Tujunga homes, was also used for the home of the late John Steven McGroarty, poet laureate of California. It is now part of the facilities of McGroarty Park."; See images #00127693 through #00127695 for all photos in this series.
