Description
Town of Mouping, Shantung Province. c.1930's. Photograph aquired by Adam Black (1891 - 1977). Printed caption on reverse reads"Shantung Province is full of ancient twons, enclosed with walls, Mouping being one of them. It is situated halfway between Chefoo and Weihaiwei and was called Ninghaichow in the Ming Dynasty. The town being on a comparatively extensive scale, Liu-chennien (one of the commanders of motley troops) has made it the base of his military operations. While Changtsungchang, now a political refugee in Japan, was the master of the province, this town was made a scene of fire and blood at intervals. It is now quiet under the White Sun Flag, but somehow it still retains something of a deep feudal tinge." Adam Black served as China Treasurer of the LMS in Shanghai from 1924 until 1951, also holding many other significant positions within the society, the Baptist Missionary Society and the Associated Mission Treasurers. Mr and Mrs Black played a significant role in China at a time of severe political unrest, including internment, until missionaries were expelled by the Communist government in 1951. This print is from a collection of photographs by an unknown photographer, possibly commercially produced.
