Photograph of the beginning of construction of a road across the sandhills in Imperial County to replace the old plank road, 1926. A truck sits at left beneath a large, cylindrical canister which sits on a wooden structure. Next to the truck a dirt road extends from the left foreground to center. Several partitions stand at the end of the road at center and a sign stands at right that reads "California Highway Commission, Across the Sandhills". Trees can be seen on the horizon in the distance. Schmidt and Hitchcock are contractors for California Highway Commission. Allotment: $270,982.
