Description
This circa 1920 photograph shows the interior of the Turner Hall Café at 914 K Street. Notables posing are co-owners Louis Graber (standing with elbow on bar) and William Dreher (seated left-of-center facing camera, left hand holding glasses). The structure was built in 1859 as the original meeting place of the Sacramento Turnverein. It served this purpose until the Turnverein moved to a new location in 1925 at 3349 J Street. Although not much is known of Graber, Dreher, a native of Germany, came to Sacramento in 1909. His first job in the Capital city was as a merry-go-round operator at Oak Park’s Joyland amusement park. Soon after, however, be became the original founder of the pictured cafe. He would go on to establish a Holstein dairy, a water company and a beer garden, all in the area of North Sixteenth Street. By the time of his death in 1962, Dreher had a street named after him in that same area.
