Baseball: From the Pacific Coast League to the Major Leagues In the winter months, when the great Negro League pitcher Leroy "Satchel" Paige barn-stormed across the country, he often ended up at White Sox Park, at 38th St. and Compton Avenue. In 1948, at age 42, Paige finally made it to the Major Leagues, helping Bill Veeck's Cleveland Indians win the 1948 World Series. He became the oldest Rookie of the Year; later, he became the first Negro League player to be inducted in the Hall of Fame. "I never threw an illegal pitch," he once said. "Once in a while I would toss one that ain't never been seen by this generation." Photo dated: October 22, 1943.
