Description
First National Bank in Monrovia sold to Bank of Italy December 1926. This building was originally the American National Bank Building built as shown in 1911. After the Security Trust and Savings Bank of Los Angeles merged with First National Bank of Monrovia into its group, the American National Bank changed its name to the First National Bank in Monrovia and at the same time changed the name of the building to the First National Bank Building as shown here, leaving the original date 1911. Later the bank merged with the Bank of Italy and the name above the doorway was added -- Bank of Italy Building, but the same change was not made to the large name at the top of the building. Later the Bank of Italy became the Bank of America. After the building was bought by Wilshire Federal Savings it was completely rehabilitated and modernized with a new facade on the Myrtle and Colorado sides. It is now owned by the Glendale Federal Savings & Loan Association. The core of the building still exists as of 2017, while the exterior walls are completely redone. The original ornate plaster ceiling still exists in the banking room above the present drop ceiling although it is not visible.
