Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes.
Elmer Bernstein was born in New York City on April 4, 1922. He was an American composer and conductor best known for his film scores, his career spanning fifty years. Bernstein composed music for film and television including the scores to The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments (1956), The Great Escape, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ghostbusters, The Black Cauldron, and Airplane! Bernstein won an Academy Award for his score to the film 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' in 1967, and was nominated for fourteen Oscars in total. He died in California on August 18, 2004.
Photograph caption dated June 26, 1961 reads "After a motion picture has been shot and edited, the producer calls in a fellow like Elmer Bernstein and says, 'Write me some fitting music for this.' Working on the forthcoming 'The Young Doctors,' Bernstein first sits at the piano in his Studio City home and composes, then transfers the notes to score sheets. In the bottom photo, we sit in on an actual recording session on the Goldwyn lot where the score is played while the actual film is screened where Bernstein can see it. And that's how it's done.'"; See images #00125861 through #00125868 for all photos in this series.
