Bishop Josiah (Mutabuzi Isaya) Kibira (left), 1925-1988, became the first African to be elected Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Buhaya, North Western Diocese, 1964-84. Kibira was also the first African to be elected President of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), 1977-84. Kibira was succeeded by Bishop Dr. Samson Mushemba (right), 1984-2000.
