Photograph was edited for publication purposes. John Royce “Johnny" Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas. He is a singer who started his career with singles of standard music. Known mostly as a singer of romantic songs, he has recorded soul, rhythm and blues, show tunes, blues, country and disco. Hugely popular in the 1950s and 60s, he had renewed popularity in the late 1970s. He has sold over 360 million records worldwide. Mathis received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. Photograph caption dated July 18, 1964 reads "Johnny Mathis enjoys workout between singing engagements." The article partially reads "I talked to Mathis in the vast living room of his Hollywood Hills home (a former Howard Hughes hideout) where the singer was getting ready for the Monday evening opener of his week's engagement at the Greek Theater."
