Description
A group of soldiers surround a pickup truck parked on the side of the road at an army checkpoint. The soldiers are all in military uniform and wearing hats. The second soldier from the right is wearing a beret. All of the soldiers are holding IMI Galil rifles of Israelí origin and wearing an armband that reads "PM," which stands for "Military Police" (in Spanish). Surrounded by soldiers is a man wearing a cowboy hat who is giving one of the soldiers a document. There is one unidentified person inside the truck. Most soldiers forced to patrol as part of the "Patrol of Self-Defense" program in the 1980s were Mayan men. Patrols were used by the military to destroy civil organizing and to control any political networks of rural Mayans. The UN-administered Truth Commission, known as the Commission of Historical Clarification documented more tan 600 massacres committed by government forces against civilians in predominately Mayan areas between 1981 and 1983.
