Albert Criz was born in 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. The architect opened offices in Beverly Hills, California in 1946. He is known for designing the Van Nuys Courthouse, most of the West Los Angeles Civic Center, the Mar Vista Gardens Housing complex and the Luxe City Center Hotel at 1020 Figueroa Street (originally the Doric Motor Hotel, owned by the Union Oil Company, and later a Holiday Inn), all in Los Angeles. Criz died in 1997. Photograph caption dated August 5, 1956 reads "Architect Albert Criz examines disputed walnut finish on courtroom walls of new $550,000 County Building in Van Nuys. Judge Vernon W. Hunt, presiding judge of Los Angeles Municipal Court, objected to 'dark, uneven finish' on walls. Criz says changes would cost nearly $10,000."
