This is a photograph of "Sister Mary Rosalia Kettl from Altoona, Pa. on a mission trip which often involved a hike of 20 miles a day. Strong feet and good sense of direction were essentials to the work in Kaying [now Meixien] where the Sisters walked from village to village teaching doctrine. Here Sr. Rosalia points the way to her companion. Sr. Rosalia, Superior of the Maryknoll Sisters in Wuchow [now Wuzhou], South China, was arrested in December, 1950 and held in various Chinese prisons until May, 1951. Police affected to have "found" opium in her rooms, and she was accused of possessing the drug. After her release from prisons, she was kept for several months in Wuchow [now Wuzhou] before her expulsion from China."
