Photograph caption dated August 30, 1984 reads, "Cashless purchases - yet with immediate payment - are now possible at 750 Mobil service stations in California, such as the one at Santa Monica Boulevard and Cottner [sic, Cotner] in West Los Angeles. Motorists can pay for gas and services with bank cards from First Interstate Bank and Crocker National that will tap directly into the buyer's bank account and immediately deduct the amount - unlike credit cards, which bill the user later on and usually allow about a month to settle up." Photograph snipe dated August 29, 1984 reads, "Debit card gas stations. Mahmoud's Gas and Snacks on Santa Monica Blvd. advertises its new convenience for customers."
