Description
The doll depicts a Yao-Mien woman in a style of dress typically worn by the Mien in Laos. She wears a black turban featuring silver strings (a common accessory for special occasions), silver earrings, a jacket with the Mien's recognizable red fluffy collar, and ornately embroidered pants (represented by multicolored fabric with silver beads attached around the waist). The doll carries an axe in her right hand, and a woven basket filled with wood on her back. From the back, the woven basket and wood are fully visible, as is a long light blue apron (worn on the backside) with a red waist sash. Typed labels affixed to the base of the stand read, (at front) 'Yao'; (at back) 'North Thai Dolls.' Label on doll stand reads, 'Yao' which is the nationality that the lu-Mien in Southeast Asia are grouped under in China and Asia. Original title from SEACRC: HMong woman, XiengKhouang (North Thai Dolls)
