Description
Annotation translation: "Cactus hedge" has been crossed out on the original caption. On the back of the image is written: "Catalogue Büchner." - "Banyan tree?" - "Vastrada Shivalingappa, a noted language scholar in Hubli, (assisted Dr Kittel), at the foot of the air roots of a banyan tree which have formed into a thicket. Air roots grow downwards, touch the earth, and develope themselves into being roots and stems. On the left is a garden hedge cut low, a confusion of cactus and agarve plants ... [illegible] ... precious young sandalwood plants, ... [illegible] ... on the road from Hubli to Dharwar, north-west of the mission compound."
Annotation: "n der ursprünglichen Bildlegende ist "Hecke von Kaktus" gestrichen. Rückseite: "Katalog: Büchner." - "Banianenbaum?" - "Vastrada Shivalingappa, ein bedeutender Sprachgelehrter von Hubli (Gehilfe von Dr. Kittel), am Fusse der zum Dickicht herausschauenden Luftwurzeln des Banianenbaumes, die sich von oben in die Erde senken, Wurzeln schlagen u. nun Stämme ansetzen. Links davon erscheint eine niedrig gehaltene Gartenhecke, die aus einem Durcheinander an Kaktus und Agaven besteht, über ... [unleserlich] ... kostbare, junge Sandelholzbäume, unmittelbar ... [unleserlich] ... an der Strasse von Hubli nach Dharwar, nordöstlich vom Missionskompound."
