Description
Photograph of plaque in memory of the builder of "Old Ironsides", ca.1900. At center located on the foremast, a large engraved, brazen plaque is visible. A bolt can be seen in each corner of the plaque, and a decorative border is visible. At the center of the plaque, an engraved image of a ship docked at a city port can be seen. To the left and the right of the plaque in the background, various ropes and pulleys are visible. Accompanying paper reiterates the words on the plaque: "In Memory of Colonel George Claghorn, Master Builder, United States Frigate Construction, Born July 6, 1748 at Chilmark Martha's Vineyard. Died February 3, 1824. The loss of life of a single citizen would mar the satisfaction and pleasure that the constructor would otherwise enjoy of building and conducting into the ocean a powerful agent of national justice which hope dictates may become the just pride and ornament of the American name, George Claghorn, Boston, Massachussets, September 18, 1797. Presented by citizens of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, 1908".
