This photograph is contained in one of two volumes by Dobbin titled "Album of San Francisco."
Text written to right of photo: "Home of Emporium after fire 1906. This building is undergoing alteration to house The Emporium at Van Ness Avenue and Post Street 1906." The building undergoing alteration is an old mansion at the northwest corner of Post and Van Ness. The alteration consists of a large addition extending to the sidewalk. Signs advertise that the Emporium is now open and that it will once again be "California's largest and America's grandest" department store. A good number of men, women, and children are walking around. A carriage and a truck are visible. Van Ness is being excavated and pipes are being installed.
