Description
"The session of the Jaipur Church. [back row L to R] Mr. Osmond, clerk of the session, P. Hanota Ram, P. Bihari Lal, [middle of front row], Pandit Isa Das at 105 died in 1901." Group portrait of members of the Jaipur session. Also pictured are Dr. George Macalister at front left and Rev. John Traill at front right. Pundit Isa Das was converted sometime between 1865 and 1868 by Dr. Collin Valentine, who established the mission in Jaipur. Pundit Bihari Lal was converted in 1870 and was a school inspector in Jaipur. Their conversions were significant because they were Brahmins, or members of the upper priestly caste. The term “pundit” means one who is learned or a scholar. P. Hanota was baptized sometime around 1873 and worked in the church bookshop. J. P. Osmond was a second generation Christian whose family was originally from Persia. He worked as a teacher. ❧ United Free Church of Scotland photographs from the Rajputana mission.
