Description
Program for the General Platoff Don Cossack Chorus, Nicholas Kostrukoff, Director, at the Civic Auditorium in San Jose. Program includes black and white images of the chorus at various locations around the world, an introduction to "The Cossack," feature on Nicholas Kostrukoff, and press reviews. The chorus also released albums under the Victor Red Seal label. "In adopting for their own the name of the famous Cossack chief (Platoff) of a century ago, the members of this famous Chorus do homage to their national hero, while in the fervor of their song they reflect their love for the lost homeland on the banks of the broad and slow-flowing Don. Under the leadership of their brilliant director, Nicholas Kostrukoff, they have built up a repertoire that ranges from the soul-inspring liturgical music of the Greek Orthodox Church and the haunting melodies of the Russian folk to their own boisterous regimental Cossack songs and those of the present-day Soviet soldier. This season marks the fifth American tour of these world-renowned Don Cossacks, since their introduction to this country in 1939 at the San Francisco Exposition. Last season, they not only proved themselves a bigger box-office attraction than ever before, but piled up a total record of 224 concerts--counting their regular transcontinental concerts, a subsequent USO tour of army camps and naval bases, and their radio broadcasts."
