Description
Before turning exclusively to polyurethane foam surfboards in 1958, Hobie Surfboards produced excellent balsa boards, such as this example made in Laguna Beach, California, in 1956. Founded by surfer and ocean sports enthusiast Hobart “Hobie” Alter, Hobie Surfboards was the industry leader between the late 1950s and the early 1970s. Hobie surfboards dominated surfing contests in Hawaii and the mainland U.S., and many prominent surfers, including Phil Edwards, Joey Cabell, Joyce Hoffman, Gary Propper, and Corky Carroll, had signature model Hobie boards. The Hobie brand also expanded to small ocean craft, skateboards, and beachwear.
