Pierre Salinger was born on June 14, 1925. He served as White House Press Secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Salinger served as a United States Senator in 1964 from August to December after the death of Clair Engle. He was defeated by Republican George Murphy for the Senate seat in November 1964. Salinger was manager for the Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign and later became known for his work as an ABC News correspondent. He died on October 16, 2004.
Photograph caption dated April 24, 1964 reads "Pierre Salinger, senatorial hopeful, shakes hands with students at Haynes Street School in Canoga Park. The portly former presidential press secretary was at the school to dedicate a plaque to the late President John F. Kennedy earlier today." Salinger was also campaigning for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate. He was running against Alan Cranston.
