A rail line took passengers Mountain Junction in Altadena to the Rubio Pavilion where the Cable Incline Railway was located. The Incline rails (seen here) went from Rubio Pavilion (the bottom) to Echo Mountain (at the top), a trip of nearly 3,000 feet, rising over 1,300 feet. In this picture a cable car loaded with people prepares to make the ascent. Note the steps on each side for passengers to enter and leave the car.
