Survival school student Joel Turner sits on a grassy area next to a handmade raft that was crafted with the use of a plastic tarp, two thin wooden logs, and string. The instructor Harry Claflin and survival school students Brian Schwarz, Ron Venn, Jack Madeley, an unidentified assistant, Marilyn Chandler, and Allen Mons stand by to help and create more replicas. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
