California Governor Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown Jr., a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, brought several thousand delegates at the National Education Association (NEA) convention to their feet Monday with a speech in which he accused President Reagan of robbing public schools to build nuclear bombs. The NEA delegates voted overwhelmingly for an immediate, universal freeze on nuclear weapons.
