Column by Charles Handy on cultural models available to businesses and the paradox of organizational growth and progress in the corporate world. Handy begins the article discussing how he used the Greek Gods as a template for describing management cultures in organizations. He proceeds to relate how all organizations are a combination of four different organizational cultures. However, Handy notes that the problem in most organizations is that some get stuck in one of them instead of mixing all four. He goes on to contend that organizations, concentrating on efficiency, should be focused on preparing their employees for portfolio lives outside traditional organizations. Doing so would help corporations become less focused on profit and more innovative in protecting employee values.
