Photograph article dated July 17, 1963 partially reads, "A fifth suspect in the bumper jack slaying of a 19-year-old Pacoima youth remained in hiding today as tensions heightened between two neighboring community gangs in the Valley. Detectives believe that Steve B. Hernandez, 18, Pacoima, may be lying hurt somewhere, carefully guarded by relatives and close friends. They think Hernandez, in pain because of a possible collar bone fracture, is not only afraid of the police, but also of a reprisal from the dead youth's gang. Hernandez was injured last Sunday night when Benito Mendivil Jr., 10506 El Dorado Ave., lunged at him with a bumper jack before being beaten to death by a car-load of youths, police said." The four suspects jailed in the bumper jack slaying of 19-year-old Pacoima youth are, Barela, Ornelaz, Aguinaga and Villavicencio, from left. They say they didn't kill Benito Mendivil.
