Description
2009-1063. View of 5 team of oxen and a covered wagon at Sutter's Fort prior to departure for the Bay Bridge opening celebration on November 12, 1936. The photograph was taken on November 5, 1936 for the Oakland Bay Bridge Commission. Governor Frank Merriam is seen with a group of men in the left background. A cowboy on horseback is seen in right foreground. Tom Cowan, seen in the left foreground with staff in hand, is the driver of the team. The lead oxen are Babe and Mose. Sacramento's contribution to the celebration of the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was the Progress of Transportation Pageant. The Pageant consisted of a different form of transportation leaving Sutter's Fort each day, traveling to San Francisco for the opening. Pageant was sponsored by the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. The covered wagon, pulled by a ten-ox team, left Sutter's Fort on Nov. 5th. Driven by Tom Cowan.
