Description
This Nov. 21, 1940, photograph shows the Fox Capitol Theater at 615 K St. and its effort to promote "Northwest Mounted Police," starring Gary Cooper and Madeleine Carroll. Three men dressed as Canadian mounted policemen are shown with a horse. Previously known as the Pantages, the Garrick, and the T and D, the Capitol opened on Aug. 18, 1923. In early 1937, the theater – the newly named Fox Capitol – underwent a massive renovation that would bring air conditioning, upholstered red velour seats, and anti-echo acoustics. Premiers on the revamped theater’s opening night included “Love is News,” with Tyrone Power and Loretta Young, and the first narrative motion picture ever made, “The Great Train Robbery.”
