Description
The Standard Furniture Company lines Eighth Street, between I and J Streets, in this circa 1940 photograph. Native New Yorker Edward Samoville founded the business in the 1939, eventually joining forces with the future owner of North Sacramento’s Star Furniture, Ralph Jennings, in the 1940s. Soon after Samoville’s death in September of 1960, Standard was closed with Jennings then striking out on his own. Standard, which claimed to offer “values and terms unsurpassed,” operated with six separate showrooms and even sold refrigerators and ranges. Samoville’s brother, Arthur, was also a furniture man, running Samoville Furniture on Seventeenth and L.
